HAND TURNED MOZAMBICAN HARDWOOD PRODUCTS

All our products are made from the beautiful and precious Moçambican hardwoods. Our range of handmade hardwood products are designed by Africa Naturally and made in Sofala by skilled local artisans.

Mocambique has a variety of beautiful hardwoods throughout the country. For our turnings we use woods available in Sofala and off-cuts for smaller items where possible. We also participate in re-forestation by growing and planting over 500 indigenous trees each year.

There are several varieties of each type of wood but below are some examples of the hardwoods we use to make our hardwood products. These unique pieces are produced from a wide range of beautiful and precious Moçambican hardwoods including:

MONZO, (Leadwood) Carbretum imberbi
Monzo is a leadwood, a very dense wood, with a dark grey colour and a lighter grain running through it. It is classified as precious and is one of the more expensive woods.

CHANFUTA, Afzelia quanzensis

Chanfuta is a lighter wood in colour, almost yellow when first cut, which turns to a light reddish colour with time.

NATACHA, Berchemia discolor
Natacha is similar to Pau Rosa, or Rose Wood, which has many varieties. It is a red colour with a dynamic grain depending on the specific type.

PAU PRETO, Dalbergia melanoxylon
This wood is a dark black or brown with black streaks. Sometimes it appears almost totally black.

PANGA PANGA, Millettia stuhlmanii
Panga Panga is sophisticated looking dark brown to almost black wood at times with a yellow to greyish grain.

Only natural finishes are used to seal and protect these pieces ensuring they retain their beauty and value. To keep your product in good condition it is important to oil them on a regular basis. We also produce a wood oil made with coconut oil, beeswax and tea tree oil.
